About the book
This book is meant to serve as a user-friendly manual for drip/microirrigation management and maintenance. It will walk you step-by-step through the proper management and proactive maintenance procedures necessary for successful drip/ microirrigation practice. Negligence of system maintenance compromises the advantages of drip/microirrigation.
The book is divided into three parts: the first part covers various aspects of drip/microirrigation management including how much water to apply, when to apply it, and how to apply it uniformly and efficiently with some expansion in the second edition on the concept of crop coefficient (kc) for Irrigation Scheduling (when and how much water to apply). The first part also covers fertigation practices, salinity management, and water penetration problems with special inference to drip/microirrigation. Some elaboration on the concept of "Salinity Management" is also added in the second edition. This addition could enable more efficient utilization of saline irrigation water for crop production particularly under the conditions of water shortage.
The second part is dedicated to system maintenance and treatment of clogging problems. The third part is mainly concerned with drip system components, which is added in the second edition of the book to include two new chapters that cover the subjects of selection of emitters and the filtration of irrigation water.
The book is a compilation of hands-on experiences in drip/microirrigation practice. It was written with irrigation practitioners in mind. Ample numerical examples are supplied to illustrate the presented concepts and enable their implementation. Formulae and examples are clearly identified. Pictures and drawings of vital drip/microirrigation system components, testing tools, and maintenance equipment are provided. Summary tables are available for quick review. Quick testing procedures, troubleshooting techniques, source of essential information for drip/microirrigation, and useful guideline tables are presented in the appendices.
Though the book refers to some facilities in California, the presented information can be adapted to many other localities.
